Program Highlights: Bridging Cultures Through Music

This concert showcases four extraordinary composers who pushed the boundaries of classical music by embracing multicultural influences in their work:
• Carlos Simon (b. 1986), a GRAMMY-nominated American composer, weaves jazz, gospel, and neo-classicism into deeply human and expressive music.

“Music is my pulpit. That’s where I preach.” – Carlos Simon
• Darius Milhaud (1892–1974), a French composer, blended jazz and Brazilian rhythms into his classical compositions, inspiring future legends like Dave Brubeck and Philip Glass.
• Dora Pejačević (1885–1923), one of Croatia’s most prominent composers, created the country’s first piano concerto and modern symphony.
• Ernő Dohnányi (1877–1960), a Hungarian pianist and composer, championed Eastern European folk music while incorporating American styles during his time in the U.S.
